REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — President Joko Widodo invited state leaders attending the 2017 Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Summit in Jakarta, Tuesday (7/3) to try rattan chairs made in Indonesia. Some of the rattan chairs were being exhibited at the event venue.

President Joko Widodo tried a rocking chair made of rattan at the booth of the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Industry Association (HIMKI). The President, who is also a former furniture entrepreneur, invited Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina Wajed, Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi, Comoros Vice President Djaffar Ahmed Said Hassani and Seychellois Vice President Vincent Meriton to try out the rattan chairs in various forms displayed at the booth.

In addition, the President also tried other booths in the exhibition arena. He was still accompanied by Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita and Head of the Creative Economy Agency (Barekraf) Triawan Munaf.

“The President said earlier that the chair was good, comfortable to sit on,” said the owner of Satori Rattan, Satori, who was guarding the booth.

Satori said that the rocking chair that President Jokowi sat on was the latest product called ‘Elena’ which prioritizes the comfort of its users. “We prioritize comfort when making this chair,” said Satori.

After the President and the country’s leaders left the booth, a staff from the Bangladesh PM appeared to return to the HIMKI booth.

“I want to buy the rocking chair that President Jokowi sat on earlier, I want to buy two,” said the staff who was accompanied by an aide.

He seemed a little pushy for Satori to immediately wrap up one of the rocking chairs that Jokowi had sat on. “The staff from the Bangladesh PM wanted to take it straight to the hotel and then transport it by plane tomorrow. He wanted to buy two even though there was only one for display at this exhibition so the other one will be sent in a month,” said Satori. According to Satori, the rocking chair was sold for IDR 2.2 million per unit.
